Gobustan Rock Art
Brief info about Gobustan Rock Art
Located about 60 kilometers southwest of Baku, the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is one of Azerbaijan’s most treasured archaeological sites. Set within a semi-desert region of rocky hills and mud volcanoes, Gobustan is home to over 6,000 ancient petroglyphs—stone carvings and engravings that provide an extraordinary window into human life dating back as far as 40,000 years.
These petroglyphs, etched into the darkened surface of limestone rocks, depict scenes of hunting, dancing, rituals, wildlife, boats, and early forms of communal life. Together, they reflect the creative and spiritual world of the people who once lived here during the Upper Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic eras. Some of the carvings even hint at early astronomical knowledge and communication methods. Due to its exceptional cultural value, Gobustan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
Beyond the petroglyphs, visitors can also explore ancient settlements, cave shelters, and unusual geological formations like the area’s famous mud volcanoes, which are considered among the most active in the world. The on-site Gobustan Museum enhances the experience, offering interactive exhibits that bring the history and science of the region to life.
Gobustan is more than just an archaeological site—it is a storybook carved in stone, preserving the voices of prehistoric humanity in one of the oldest artistic traditions on Earth.
