Lankaran
Lankaran, located in southeastern Azerbaijan along the Caspian Sea coast and at the foot of the Talysh Mountains, is a region of lush subtropical landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and serene natural beauty. Known as the greenest region of the country, Lankaran is perfect for travelers seeking a tranquil escape surrounded by forests, tea plantations, and historical charm.
Once part of the Talysh Khanate, Lankaran’s past is etched into its architectural landmarks like the 18th-century Lankaran Fortress (also known as Zindan Tower), the beautiful Boyuk Bazar Mosque, and the historic Khan’s House. The region’s unique identity is also shaped by the Talysh ethnic group, whose language, cuisine, and traditions are still very much alive.
Nature lovers will be enchanted by Hirkan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site preserving ancient forests and rare species like the Persian ironwood tree. Just outside the city, Khanbulan Lake and the Gizil-Agaj Nature Reserve offer peaceful landscapes ideal for wildlife watching and eco-tourism.
Lankaran is also Azerbaijan’s tea capital. Visitors can tour lush tea plantations and enjoy a glass of local black tea, often accompanied by citrus fruits like the region’s famous Lankaran lemons. Don’t miss traditional dishes like lavangi (stuffed fish or chicken with walnut and onion) and kulcha (a spiced, flaky pastry).
With mineral-rich black sand beaches, hot springs in nearby Istisu, and the warm hospitality of the locals, Lankaran is a destination where nature, wellness, and culture come together in perfect harmony.
